affordable housing? anyone have any experience?

i asked this before but didnt get a GREAT answer..im a single women expecting a baby in june, i cannot afford tyhe place im living in now and would like to apply for affordable housing...i was just wondering in the state of new jersey how long does it take for my name to come up on the waiting list? and am i priority since im having a baby?
